COMPACTS AND COSMETICS: BEAUTY FROM VICTORIAN TIMES TO THE PRESENT DAY - Madeleine Marsh

Back in the day (i.e. about 5 years ago) I took some Women's Studies courses in college. One of the main things I learned that stuck with me was that the worse things are for society in general, the better they are for the relative status of women in that society. For example, during WWII men were overseas fighting and out of necessity, women took over many jobs that had previously been unavailable to them. This was a huge step in the history of women. Though after the war many women returned to the home and set about being wives and mothers, that experience wedged open a door that has since been flung open.

Madeleine Marsh is a historian, who specializes in antiques. She has an entire room that houses her vintage makeup collection - and she can tell you not only when each item was made and what it was used for, but how the cosmetics (or lack thereof) associated with each era reflected what society expected women to be during that time.

For me, it's a fascinating read. I have been intrigued by cosmetics since I was quite young - not as a vain thing, more because of the artistic expression it allows, and the way it can transform someone's appearance, and with it, who they are perceived to be.

The book itself is beautifully presented - it's printed on glossy paper, and there are old advertisements and pictures of vintage cosmetics every page or two throughout the whole book so that readers can see what is being described.

It's definitely a niche book that sits right on the intersection of history, Gender/Women's Studies and an interest in cosmetics, so I certainly don't think it's for everyone. But if at least one of those topics is of interest to you (or all of them!) you won't find a better read!

Book or Movie?

There's often a bit of debate about this question. I've heard many people have heated and lengthy discussions about the relative value of the book or movie version of a beloved story, and whichever side people are on, they rarely change their minds.

I must say that as a general rule, I do prefer the book - particularly if I read the book (and loved it) before watching the movie version. This was true for Lord of the Rings, Under the Tuscan Sun and I Capture the Castle.

Some books just don't translate to the screen (*ahem* Even Cowgirls Get the Blues *ahem*) and should never be made into movies.

Others I find that I like the movie nearly as much as the book - if not as much - but for different reasons. For example, I love the Harry Potter movies, and the first Hunger Games movie. I found that the HP movies were so well cast, the world created on screen was amazing, and it stuck to the books closely enough for the first few movies that I could really enjoy them. I was slightly disappointed in the final movie - but by that time I had read all the books (I read the first few after seeing the first two movies) and it's possible that had something to do with it.

Even Bridget Jones' Diary - though very different from how I imagined when reading the book - had its own magic that made it an enjoyable couple of hours.

I'm looking forward to seeing if The Hobbit lives up to my expectations - I'm going to risk LOTR fans' wrath by saying it is probably my favourite Tolkien story!

I'm moving soon, which means that, sadly, my books are in the boxes up there. Because of that, and the fact that I'm not particularly fond of stress, I'm taking a wee break from Backlist. But don't fret - I'll be back in a month or so! Just as soon as my books are unpacked..

1001 Books to Read Before You Die (Like You Didn't Have Enough to Read Already)

Who doesn't like a good list? I very much enjoyed going through the BBC list of 100 books most people haven't read and discovering that I'd read about a third of them (though I do feel as if I should get on with it and read more).

So when a friend told me he was working through a list of 1001 movies to watch before you die, I immediately thought, "Well, if there's a list of 1001 movies, there must be a list of 1001 books to read before you die - which would be even more fun!" There is.

Ex Libris

While shopping at Chapters a couple of weeks ago, I stopped by their section full of random knick knacks and notions. I've always been a sucker for the sort of things you don't really need, but that you desperately want. These fit that description perfectly. Aren't they cute?

I particluarly like the little card on the inside flap that bears the quote:

Pick Me!

I assume, since you're here reading this, that you love book shopping. I also assume you can spend hours (if not days) wandering around a bookstore picking up and putting down various books before carefully selecting one or two (or, if you're me, ten) to take home with you. But what makes you pick up a particular book in the first place?

I was talking to a friend yesterday about this. He told me that there are a few things that a book needs in order to get his attention. The first, despite that old saying, is the cover. I tend to agree on this one - an author's choice in cover art does say something about the book and the author's style. That's not to say I've never enjoyed a book without loving the cover, but I'll rarely pick one up randomly when wandering around in a book store. The second important element was, of course the cover blurb. Which we'll all agree is quite important.

What really intrigued me, however, was his third point: that the protagonist nearly always needs to be male. He went on to explain that it's not because he's sexist or dislikes reading about women, but rather that he has a hard time placing himself in the story when the protagonist is of a different gender.

This had honestly never occurred to me, but now that it has, I can't un-occur it.I have been thinking back over some of my favourite books, and trying to assess whether the gender of the protagonist affected my enjoyment. Honestly, I'd have to say no. And I wonder why.

Is it because so many books about/for women are of the Danielle Steele or "chick lit" variety and therefore, quite frankly, I have no interest in experiencing them? Is it because so many of the awesome, kickass characters I've read are men? Or because I get along (and have always gotten along) better with men?

After a lot of thought, I think it's possible that reading books with protagonists that are male, female, transgender/sexual, mice, even tin cans and crackers (Tom Robbins' Skinny Legs and All, in case you're curious) has made me a more empathetic person. It's helped me become more comfortable imagining myself in others' shoes. And imagine all the amazing books I would have missed out on if I demanded a female protagonist? The Cather in the Rye, Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Travels with My Aunt... the list goes on and on.

What do you all think? Does the gender (or species or type of food) of the protagonist inform your decision about whether or not to read a book? And do you find that your enjoyment is more intense if you share the same gender as the protagonist?

I spent much of the weekend bemoaning the fact that I was unable to partake of the Half Price Books 20% off sale since I live in Canada, and we don't have Half Price Books here. I watched, half of me happy for the fortune of others, half of me incredibly jealous, as you guys posted one #hpbhaul picture after another on Twitter. I sulked. I pouted. It wasn't pretty.

You can imagine how happy I was to discover this on my Facebook wall this morning! FREE BOOK! Of course you have to buy three to get it, and only in store, at full cover price... but still! A free book is a free book! So if you're north of the border and near a Chapters, head in and check out their shelves anytime between now and Sunday, June 3rd.

Who's not a sucker for a good list? And this one is pretty darn good. You might have seen this circulating on Facebook (where I lifted it from). Apparently the average person will only have read six of the books on this list of books compiled by the BBC. I was pleased to discover that I've finished over 30 of them (marked) and read at least part of some others.
